Recent Chapter Activities

Arizona (April 2008) spring time found the ISPA Southwest Chapter searching for birds…..Big Red Cardinals in fact. The only suitable habitat turned out to be the new Cardinals’ Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (also known as the University of Phoenix Stadium; but since stadiums’ official names change as sponsorships change, it will always be the Cardinals’ Stadium)!

A group of chapter members and guests toured the facility as guests of Bob Petrowski, Director of VRTechnology. They discovered that the retractable roof and field make the stadium unlike any other in North America. The stadium is designed to host football, basketball, soccer, concerts, consumer shows, motorsports, rodeos and corporate events. They also sadly learned that there is a long waiting list for season tickets for many of the venues; and even if they managed to work their way to the top of the list, they couldn’t afford to buy the tickets!

The afternoon featured a great lunch sponsored by Galorath, Inc. (thanks to Brian Glauser!), and:
  • A keynote presentation by Dr. Otto Furuta, Managing Director of MACS (Material & Contract Services) on “Supply Chain Management – Separating Predators from Prey.” Presentation 1

  • And technical paper presentations by:
    • Brian Glauser, V.P of Business Development, Galorath, Inc., on "The Use of Process Based Parametric Estimation Tools To Improve Supply Chain Value." Presentation 2
    • Mike Rose, President of r2Estimating, LLC on "A New Software Estimating Relationship - Know the Odds before Placing Your Bet."Presentation 3
    • Tim Christopherson, Cost Engineering Section Head and Master Six Sigma Expert, Raytheon Missile Systems, on “Leveraging Lean Sigma To Create Affordable Solutions." Presentation 4

We heard comments from workshop attendees that this was the best workshop ever. Hard to imagine after the enjoyable and informative tours of Intel (Chandler, AZ) and The Boeing Company’s Rotorcraft facility (Mesa, AZ).

Chapter members were also requested to volunteer for or submit nominees for a chapter election. It will be exciting to see what the new officers have in store for us!

October 24, 2007, the Southwest Chapter goes “LEAN” Workshop hosted by The Boeing Company at their Mesa, Arizona facility. The day’s activities included a morning of technical presentations, a complimentary lunch hosted by Boeing, and an afternoon tour of the 2005 Shingo Award-Winning Helicopter Assembly facility. (The Shingo Award is the “Nobel Prize” for Lean Manufacturing Practices!)

With George as a mentor, Jerry researched, wrote, and will present his first technical paper at the 2007 ISPA/SCEA Conference in New Orleans, June 12-15, 2007. Congratulations to Jerry and George for a successful collaboration!
